Eddie Mighten

Eddie is a Teaching Fellow in the Institute of Sport Business, with research interests in leadership and professional football exploring ideas that explain the influence leaders have on those they interact with.

Profile

Eddie comes with a wealth of experience from across a variety of industries including roles in higher education, the media, voluntary sector, sport coaching and professional football. Eddie has also provided senior academic leadership in the areas of learning, teaching and assessment, curriculum development and quality management and enhancement in Higher Education.

Academic background

Eddie completed an interdisciplinary PhD in the areas of sport, leadership, linguistics and sociology at Sheffield Hallam University, invoking the idea of felicity conditions to explore how and why leaders are able to influence in a requisite way. He holds a BSc in Sport Science and Administration from Nottingham Trent University and a MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Eddie has extensive lecturing and teaching experience in a variety different subject areas including leadership, management, organisational behaviour and HRM in the context of Sport. He has also supervised undergraduate and master’s dissertation research projects and provided academic support as a personal tutor.

Research

Current research and collaborations

Eddie’s current research interests explore the broad idea of leadership influence and concepts such as authority, authenticity and sincerity. He is also pursuing a new research stream that explore the influence of parents on the player journey through the UK football academy system.

Interests and activities

Eddie has a passion for sport and football in particular having worked in the industry as a player, licenced coach in the United States intercollegiate system and a television presenter for ESPN.
