Dermot Hodson is an expert in the field of political economy. He has published widely on FinTech, the European Union’s efforts to become a digital superpower and the changing dynamics of European integration and governance.

Profile

Dermot Hodson studied Economics and Philosophy at Trinity College, Dublin (BA), European Economic Studies at the College of Europe, Bruges (MSc) and European Political Economy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (PhD). His doctoral thesis won the European University Association for Contemporary European Studies PhD Prize.

Before joining Loughborough, Dermot worked at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (2004-07) and Birkbeck College, where he was Lecturer (2007-11), Senior Lecturer (2011-15), Reader (2015-19) and Professor in Political Economy (2019-23). At Birkbeck, he served as Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Research and Assistant Dean for Education in the School of Social Sciences and as Director of Research in the Department of Politics.

He has written seven books and fifty journal articles and won funding from the British Academy and the Economic and Social Research Council. He has worked as an Economist for the European Commission and as an external consultant to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. He is Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges.

He has held visiting positions at the College of Europe, Natolin and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Research

Current research and collaborations

Dermot Hodson’s most recent book looks at the history of the European Union since the 1992 Maastricht Treaty. He is currently Principal Investigator on Banking on Europe, a three-year project funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and the Luxembourg National Research Fund, on how the EU came to borrow €750 billion to invest in Europe’s digital and green transition after COVID-19.

Current PhD / research supervisions

Dermot supervised five PhD students to completion at Birkbeck, University of London and acted as external supervisor for one student at the University of Luxembourg. He is open to expressions of interest from prospective doctoral students working on topics that are closely related to his research interests, including the political economy of digital technology and European integration and governance.

Interests and activities

Dermot Hodson is Series Editor for Oxford University Press's New European Union Series and a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal for European Public Policy and Agenda Publishing's Comparative Political Economy Series.

He is a member of the European Union Studies Association, the University Association for Contemporary European Studies and the Council of European Studies (CES). He served as Co-Chair of the CES European Integration and Global Political Economy Network from 2019-23.

Impact and knowledge exchange are central to Dermot's research. He has given evidence to several House of Lords inquiries, presented his research at the European Central Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and been a member of the Irish Government’s Global Foreign Policy Network. He served as external consultant to the European Research Group at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

He has published op-eds in The Guardian, The Irish Times, Politico Europe and The Washington Post and given interviews to BBC Radio 4’s The World Tonight and RTE’s Drive Time.
